Whalers USP3 Sweeps Eagles, Elite Splits

Saturday USP3 2-0 WIN

The Whalers came into the weekend looking to bounce back from a disappointing weekend in Atlanta and faced a tough test against the 10-1-1 Carolina Eagles. The re-focused Whalers locked down and outworked the Eagles all night on Saturday and skated away with a 2-0 shutout win.

Gary Eastlack and Ryan Lorenz each scored for the Whalers. Jonah Lainesse, Jacob Ward, Nolan Cavanagh, and Adam Campbell each tallied 1 assist. Everett Yasinski made 24 saves in goal for the win and his 2nd shutout of the season.

The Whalers held a 33-24 shot on goal advantage. Hampton Roads finished 0 for 2 on the power play, the Eagles were 0 for 3.

Saturday Elite 7-0 WIN

Saturday night the Whalers looked to extend their 7 game winning streak coming off a 2 game sweep in Atlanta. After a 6-0 victory in their 1st match-up this season with the Eagles, the Whalers picked up where they left off, cruising to a dominating 7-0 win.

Brandon Osmundson potted 2 goals, Tianyou Zuo, Billy Brock, Cole Helgemo, Travis Volmert, and John Moncovich each netted 1. Brendon Zack had 3 assists, Jordan Shannon, Tianyou Zuo, and Colton Seeman each had 2, while Cole Helgemo and Brandon Osmundson each had 1. Sean Dickson improved to 6-0 in 6 starts in net and posted his 3rd shutout of the year with 12 saves.

The Whalers held a 37-12 shot on goal advantage. Hampton Roads went 2 for 5 on the power play while Carolina was 0 for 2.

Sunday USP3 5-4 WIN

Game 2 on Sunday was much more wide open and penalties cost the Whalers early trailing 3-1 and 4-2 before a furious 3rd period rally led to a big comeback 5-4 win.

Gary Eastlack scored twice, Ryan Lorenz, Mathieu Doucet, and Matthew Hanchon each had 1. Collin Markoski netted 2 assists while Jacob Ward, Jonah Lainesse, Gary Eastlack, Matthew Hanchon, Adam Campbell, Max Loga, and Nolan Cavanagh each had 1. Everett Yasinski scored the win in net with 33 saves.

The Eagles held a 37-24 shot on goal advantage, aided by 6 power plays in which they capitalized on 3. The Whalers finished 0 for 1 on the power play.

Sunday Elite 3-1 Loss

On Sunday, the story was much different as the Whalers 8 game winning streak came to a screeching halt at the hands of Brandon Brown and the Carolina Eagles. The Eagles frustrated the Whalers all game and road 3 power play goals to a 3-1 win, handing the Whalers their 1st regulation loss of the season.

Billy Brock notched the lone Whalers goal from Brandon Osmundson and John Moncovich with just 52 seconds left to spoil Brown’s shutout. Zach Alvarado took the loss in goal with 26 saves.

The Whalers held a 31-29 shot advantage. The Eagles went 3 for 6 on the power play while the Whalers struggled to a 1 for 7 mark. Colton Seeman was ejected for the Whalers.

The Whalers will take to the road for the next month, playing the next 10 games away from the Chilled Ponds as they kick off the road trip down the road in Richmond for the I-64 rivalry with the Richmond Generals.
