Whalers Honor Fallen Brother w/ Weekend Sweep Over Potomac

Whalers Elite grabs a share of 1st place, USP3 jumps into 5th.

It’s been an emotional week at Whaler Nation, as the Whalers celebrated the life and legacy of fallen Whaler Gerald Owen. With many Whalers alumni from the past 10 season’s in attendance, the Whalers put on a dominating show, sweeping the 4 game series with the Patriots.

USP3 12-0 WIN

The Whalers started fast on Saturday night and never looked back, cruising to a 12-0 shutout victory over Potomac.

Noah Kramer, Max Loga, and Cole Helgemo each tallied a pair of goals while Gary Eastlack, Matthew Hanchon, Caelan Bolanowski, Ryan Lorenz, and Nolan Cavanagh each had 1. Jonah Lainesse and Matthew Hanchon had 3 assists, Collin Markoski, Cody Wilson, Gary Eastlack, Mathieu Doucet, and Ryan Lorenz had 2, while Tyler Dienna, Noah Kramer, Jacob Ward, Caelan Bolanowski, Max Loga, Cole Helgemo, and Nolan Cavanagh had 1. Everett Yasinski posted his 3rd shutout of the season in net with 7 saves.

The Whalers held a 83-7 shot on goal advantage. The Whalers went 4 for 8 on the power play, Potomac went 0 for 2.

Elite 10-1 WIN

On Saturday night the Whalers fired 19 shots on goal in the opening frame, tallying 3 times and never looking back in a 10-1 win over Potomac.

Former Patriot Liam Walsh tallied a hat-trick against his former club. Charles DuBose notched his 1st career Elite goal, while Billy Brock, Andriy Denyskin, John Moncovich, Tianyou Zuo, John Horn, and Brandon Osmundson also tallied 1 goal each. Billy Brock had 4 helpers, Brandon Osmundson, Trent Wydrowski, and Andriy Denyskin each had a trio of helpers, John Moncovich had 2, while Nick Richards and Conner Hunt had 1. Zach Alvarado scored his 9th win of the season in net with 20 saves.

The Whalers had a 51-21 shot on goal advantage. The Whalers went 2 for 4 on the power play, Potomac was 0 for 2.

USP3 13-0 WIN

The Whalers offense continued to hum along on Sunday, as 15 different Whalers found the scoresheet in a 13-0 romp.

Matthew Hanchon paced the offense with 9 points. Gary Eastlack, Caelan Bolanowski, and Cole Helgemo each posted a hat trick. Hanchon, Jaymen Swygert, Trevor Byers, and Nolan Cavanagh each posted 1 goal. Hanchon had 8 assists, Ryan Lorenz had 4, Collin Markoski, Robert Brown, Jonah Lainesse, Cody Wilson, and Adam Campbell had 2, while Jacob Ward, Caelan Bolanowski, Mathieu Doucet, and Cole Helgemo each had 1. Steve McGuire picked up his 2nd shutout of the year and 6th win in net with 10 saves.

The Whalers held an 80-10 edge in shots. The Whalers didn’t have a power play while the Patriots were 0 for 2.

Elite 5-2 WIN

Potomac goalie Joe Longo turned aside 28 shots in the opening period, but the Whalers offense connected 3 times in the middle frame en route to a 5-2 win and weekend sweep.

John Moncovich scored twice, and now sits 1 goal away from 50 on the season. Billy Brock, Liam Walsh, and Travis Volmert each scored once. Brandon Osmundson had 3 helpers, Billy Brock had 2, John Moncovich and Trent Wydrowski each had 1. Alec Lindberg won his 4th straight in net with 20 saves.

The Whalers held a 69-22 shot advantage. The Whalers went 1 for 4 on the power play, Potomac was 0 for 2.

The Whalers will wrap up the regular season this weekend as they make their lone trip of the season to Charlotte, NC for a weekend set with the Charlotte Rush on Saturday and Sunday.

Playoff Picture
The USPHL Elite Regular season title will come down to the final weekend of the regular season, as the Whalers and Charlotte Rush are knotted up with 75 points at the top of the standings. The Whalers need to gain 3 points next weekend to clinch the division, as the Rush hold the tie breaker for 1st place with 37 wins to the Whalers 36. The 1 seed will face Palm Beach in Round 1, while the 2 seed will host the Atlanta Knights or Richmond Generals pending next weekend’s results. Currently Richmond has a 1 point lead over Atlanta for 6th.

The Whalers USP3 team moved up into 5th position after this weekend’s sweep as they played their 2 games in hand. The Whalers currently hold a 1 point edge over the Atlanta Knights going into the final weekend of the season. The Whalers will face off with the Charlotte Rush this weekend while Atlanta visits Carolina. The Whalers need 2 points or Atlanta to achieve 0 points in the final weekend to secure the 5 seed. The 5th seed will travel to 4 Richmond in round 1, while the 6th seed will visit 3 Carolina.
